Keywords for ATS Optimization
ATS ranks resumes by keyword match. Pull keywords directly from the job description—skills, technologies, certifications. Use our Job Description Keyword Extractor to get a list. Focus on terms that appear multiple times or in the "required" section.
Integrate them in your summary, skills section, and bullet points. Avoid keyword stuffing; keep language natural. Match exact phrases when possible (e.g., "project management" if that's what the job says). Synonyms don't always count—ATS may look for exact matches.
Include both hard skills (Python, Salesforce, Agile) and soft skills (leadership, communication) when they appear in the posting. If the job mentions "cross-functional collaboration," use that phrase somewhere in your resume. Soft skills are often overlooked but many ATS systems scan for them.
Keyword placement matters. Some ATS systems weight the summary and skills section more heavily. Ensure your top keywords appear in those sections, not just buried in experience bullets. Repeating a keyword 2–3 times across the resume can help, as long as it reads naturally.
Don't sacrifice readability for keywords. Natural integration is better than awkward stuffing. If a keyword doesn't fit naturally, consider adding it to your skills section. Some ATS systems also scan for keyword density in specific sections.
Industry jargon can be keywords too. "Agile," "Kanban," "SCRUM" in project management; "KPI," "ROI," "pipeline" in sales; "CI/CD," "microservices" in tech. Use the terms your target industry uses. When in doubt, pull phrases directly from the job description. Mirroring their language increases match scores.
